Members will be saddened to hear that Mike Anderson has passed away. Mike attended Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and played in the Varsity Match in 1959 and 1960. He won the President’s Putter in 1960, his final year as an undergraduate. Mike was a long-standing member of Royal Liverpool and Burnham & Berrow and a great supporter of Society golf.
Mike donated his President’s Putter medal to Royal Liverpool Golf Club along with the following note on that 1960 President’s Putter:
“The Putter was won at a time when nothing was happening in the Club apart from Michael Pearson who regularly played for Cheshire. The ‘Old Guard’ had almost disappeared apart from the obvious like the Grahams, Thomsons, Shones and Behrends.
My caddy, William Moberly offered to carry my bag thinking he is bound to lose in the first round against Tom Sharp. I beat him going round in 73 by one hole. By some miracale he carried my bag for 7 rounds, William was a godsend to me, misclubing only once at the 4th hole. The Sunday before I had played John Graham who said afterwards that ‘if you play like that when you go to Rye you will be beaten by 10 and 8’.
I narrowly managed to win all of those games. Amongst them were two Walker Cup players, one International, the Captain of Oxford and the rest were county players. I remember all of them to this day.
The medal has been ‘borrowed’ from its case in the Hall on occasion for dinners, it had been lost but found again! It has had an adventure of its own but Hoylake is where it belongs”.
The photo shows Mike playing to the 17th green at a very snowy Rye during that final against Lionel Gracey.
